Welcome to the first day of class in STEM and leaf. I am excited to begin the course and to have to opportunity to share the experience with all of you. I wanted to start with an outline of the course and expectations thereof.
This course will cover all things related to education. As a mathematics professor, I am inclined to focus on math and the sciences (STEM). However, all areas of study are extremely important. We will delve into humanities, fine arts and other areas as the interest arises. The name of the course is tongue and cheek reference to stem and leaf plots, but also a visualization of education as whole.
Within this context, I plan to discuss how to help students of all ages learn in and out of the classroom. I will discuss high impact teaching practices in the classroom, ways to get students more interested, and keeping students, including your own children, engaged in the learning process outside of school.
While there will be some lecturing, as is the case right now, I hope that class will provide comments, insight and questions that will lead to me learning as much in the process as all involved. Normally, I would make class attendance mandatory; however, I hope you will join the class when you can and are interested in doing so. I look forward to getting to know all of you in this process.
Thank you for joining this class and allowing me the opportunity to discuss these topics that are extremely interesting to me.
